What is the ICCP?

The International Campaign for Cures of Spinal Cord Injury Paralysis (ICCP) is a body of affiliate non-profit organizations, working to fund research into cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury. The ICCP coalition mission is "to expedite the discovery of cures for Spinal Cord Injury Paralysis". 

This web site has been created as an information resource for interested individuals, organizations and governments who wish to understand more about, and perhaps, contribute to spinal cord injury research.

In the following pages you can read about our group's background, our mission and our group objectives.  We will also link you to the web sites of our affiliate members.   ICCP members represent many of the leading spinal cord injury research fundraising charities around the world.  We encourage you to spend time at these sites, as they offer a wealth of information about spinal cord injury, current research and ways you can help to discover the cure. A summary of the ICCP initiative appears in the journal Spinal Cord (May 2004).

Background

For almost twenty years, a small number of charitable organizations throughout the world have worked tirelessly to promote research to find cures for spinal cord injury paralysis.  When they began their quest, the conventional wisdom was that paralysis and other consequences of spinal cord injury were incurable, and that once damaged, the spinal cord could not be repaired. 

Today, those organizations can be credited with funding research that has realized many significant discoveries in the field, brining scientists new optimism and significantly changing the outlook for people suffering a spinal cord injury.  The question today is not if effective treatments and cures will be found, it is a question of when!  

With this in mind, those organizations promoting spinal cord research have met to determine the ways in which their collaborative efforts can hasten progress in this field. On the 12th of May 1998 in Charlottesville, Virginia they signed a "Statement of Intent" and the ICCP was formed.
